Additional information provided by Hilary Jarvis : Daniel was born in 1780. He seems to have had a lively interest in the world around him throughout his life. At the age of 18, he wrote 'An Introduction to Botany' – a tiny handwritten parchment book, giving examples of the Linneaen system of classification, with sketches of plant types. He became a doctor, first being apprenticed to Robert Dyer, an apothecary in Bristol, and eventually becoming M.D of St. Andrews University. In 1805 he married Anne Cullimore, daughter of John Cullimore of Morton Grange, Thornbury, and grand-daughter of Mary Raymond. Daniel and Ann settled in Wick, a village east of Bristol on the Chippenham road. Five of their six children were born there. Then in 1820 John Cullimore died, and Dr. Gingell moved to Morton Grange. He made repairs and alterations to the ancient house, and improved the garden, laying a lawn and building an arbour and a grotto. The family had many pets, including Dr. Gingell's own favourite tortoishell cat, Tiddy, for whom he would shoot birds, and whose neat toilet arrangements he admired. There were several dogs, horses, and two goats which supplied milk for the household. A tame seagull lived in a house in the 'Gull's Garden'. A strange pet was Matzuchetti, a toad that lived in the cellar, named after an Italian master at one of the children's schools! He had a Cabinet of Curiosities in an outhouse – 'dancing dolls moved by a musical box, a steam engine model, and his illicit still'! A portrait at Morton Grange may be of him, and shows a benign-looking country gentleman, holding a dog. He died in 1860.
